A king size mattress measures 76 inches wide by 80 inches long. This type of mattress is more popular on the eastern side of the U.S., hence its alternative name of eastern king. This is the longest standard mattress available in North America. While the slightly narrower width would be imperceptible to many people, the extra 4 inches in length over the regular king can make a great deal of difference in comfort for taller sleepers. The California king is the common king size mattress in the western part of the United States. (This knowledge might be helpful if you should ever move, because in some parts of the country, you would need to be careful to get linens of the correct size.)
